Individual Lesson Ideas...
We have a number of suggested projects for you. We’re full of creative ideas of things you can sew with a minimum of effort, are versatile, flattering and look superb like the wide leg trousers below! The projects we are highlighting below are to designed to be fun, engaging, interactive, and a few can be done as a parent/child joint project. Of course in an individual lesson, the sky is the limit for what you want to do — and learn. But, if you need a creative idea to get you started, see our suggestions of the things you can create where you can — Make it. Wear it. AND Look your Best!
Think some friends might like to join you in your creative endeavors? Considering making your own workshop. Grab some friends and we can usually come up with something in terms of both price and date. The minimum number of people to “Make-your-own-Workshop” is three (3) people. We’d be happy to try and fit something in. Contact us at 609.386.4218 or justmakeitsew@justmakeitsew.com to see what we can do.
Wide Leg Trousers.
I’m a huge fan of a tv series you’ve probably never heard of — “Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries”. Set in the roaring 20’s in Melbourne, Australia, actress Essie Davis’ wardrobe is to die for and her character Miss Phryne Fisher is an independent, confident and self-made female detective. We’ve taken that inspiration and combined it with the latest fashion trend for this fall and are offering an opportunity where you can make your own stylish and on-trend pants with a wide-leg option as an individual lesson option.
Most people are afraid to make their own pants based on fit. But I can attest that this pattern is almost perfect and you will need few if any adjustments. Based on a pattern from an indie pattern company, in this lesson series we’ll walk you through the process of styling and adjusting the pattern with a wide-leg. Combine this fashionable pattern with one of our premium fabrics (like the Dolce and Gabbana fabric shown here) and you’ll have your own me-made AND true-to-fit fashion item. If you’d be able to purchase this in a high-end department store, you’d spend up to $1495 (or more) for a item like this. Make it with us and choose from a number of designer (or not) fabrics like the Dolce, or Carolina Herrera, Anthropologie, and more! Not a beginner lesson series, this pattern assumes those who have an intermediate sewing skill and is appropriate for who have sewn with us and who have experience working with patterns (advanced beginner to intermediate). Due to the wide variety of potential fabric needs and choices, fabric can be purchased separately.
Sewing on the Bias
Take your sewing to the next level and learn to cut and “Sew-on-the-Bias”. Bias cut garments hang delicately on your body and offers stretch, softness and flexibility in a woven fabric. Patterns cut on the bias skim the body in a more flattering way. By sewing on the bias you can make the simplest of patterns look and feel elegant and sumptuous. In the item pictured here, the skirt has both a silky and flowy appearance, simply by cutting the fabric and sewing on-the-bias.
As a first project, we are suggesting you sew your own skirt using one of our woven fabrics like the one pictured here. This can be done as an individual lesson (allow 3-4 hours) or — take advantage of our special two-person lesson offering — where two people taking the class together at the same time qualify for this special lesson rate. Fabric is not included with your purchase of lessons.
If you sign up for this special lesson package, we will provide up to four (4) hours of instruction for any two people learning this technique. Additional hours — if needed — can be purchased for $47.50 per hour for two people. This lesson package is expected to be done in a combination of two (2) two-hour sessions. This class is not appropriate for those who have never used a sewing machine before, but we are happy to work with anyone who has taken our Intro to Sewing Class or who has sewn with us before. Dates and times are flexible, based on your schedule and our availability.
This lesson package is perfect for two friends or as a Mother-daughter combination. (We recommend the minimum age of the youngest person be 12 or older.) Be ready for Hanukkah, Christmas, or Kwanza and plan now to make something new for your wardrobe for Autumn/Winter. Plan now for Thanksgiving, holiday parties, any kind of social event. Make matching or similar outfits as a mother-daughter combination.
The Jo Top
No, I didn’t name it, but it works!
Simplicity can be beautiful! Simplicity combined with comfort is next to heaven on earth. Let us show you how to make this adorable, comfortable and relatively easy make.
This short jumper with three-quarter-length balloon sleeves is sure to become one of your favorite wardrobe basics. Self fabric is used for the neck binding, wrist trim, and hem band. Jo can be worn sporty with trousers or chic with a skirt. The project is beginner friendly.
We estimate you will need between 2-3 hours to complete this project and suggest purchasing a block of lessons to complete it. It is perfect as an introduction to sewing as two friends doing this together or as a Mother-Daughter project. Choose this as a special lesson project for two people and you’ll qualify for a special lesson rate. Follow this link to sign up for the special lesson rate or simply purchase a block of individual hours to complete the project. If you sign up for the two person special lesson package, we’ll provide up to three (3) hours of instruction for any two people doing this together. Additional hours — if needed — can be purchased for $47.50 per hour for two people. Fabric is not included with the purchases of these sessions. Dates and times are flexible, based on your schedule and our availability.
